In a historic move, Governor Phil Murphy signed 2022:S4265/2022:A5912 into law on January 16, 2024, marking the most substantial reform of New Jersey’s outdated liquor license laws in almost a century. The new law aims to increase the number of available liquor licenses statewide by making unused licenses available. Most importantly, it removes a myriad of restrictions that have long impeded the progress of craft alcohol manufacturers like distilleries and breweries.

Porzio Governmental Affairs’ Director Beau Huch advocated on behalf of the NJ Craft Distiller’s Guild to be included in the momentous change. Serving as the authoritative voice for distilled spirits in New Jersey, the Guild advocates for small, independent craft distilleries, contributing to industry growth and fostering a heightened appreciation for spirits.

Beau Huch emphasized, “This legislative milestone highlights the teamwork of those acknowledging the crucial role NJ Craft Distillers play in our state’s economy. It signals a shift from outdated constraints, empowering these businesses to thrive. Absent this law, how could a craft alcohol manufacturer effectively promote their product without full use of their tasting room? What harm was there ever in coordinating with food vendors? How could a business apply for a loan to expand without providing a business plan that they were permitted to follow with certainty? This new law finally gives some much needed certainty to help this award winning industry grow and we are tremendously grateful to our legislative leaders and Governor Murphy who supported these changes.”

The NJ Craft Distiller’s Guild, guided by its mission to support members and small craft distillers across New Jersey, acknowledges the profound contributions made by its members. With an unwavering commitment to the production of quality distilled spirits, the Guild envisions a future where the industry thrives, positively impacting employment, commerce, charity, and community support.
